I went to the grocery (or made groceries as the New Orleans in-laws say) the other day and noticed a woman sniffing the raspberries. This was not odd to me; Americans touch and inspect their fruit before purchase; unlike the French, who have professionals for that sort of thing.
Then the lady opened the carton and started munching on the raspberries. I stood there in disbelief, hand halfway in the tomato pile, and made a face.
Then the woman give her daughter a few raspberries. Again I made a face, and added a growl.
After this, the woman decided that these raspberries were sub par, so she grabbed the other raspberries out of her daughter's hands and put them BACK IN THE CONTAINER and put the container back on the shelf. HORROR!
However, (gulp) I'm open-minded: is this a proper way to buy fruit?

So my dirty fruit secret, I ALWAYS taste my grapes, but only one. They're the only fruit that I taste. Your encounter with the rasberries was gross and makes me want to bleach mine now...but for some reason I always taste test one grape to see if they're sweet or not...if they aren't then I move on. But I wouldn't dare take a bite of an apple...unless it looked REALLY scrumptious
