I love Halloween. This year I wanted to be Cindy Lu Who, my husband was going to be the Grinch, and the dog, Tchoupitoulas (don't ask) was going to be Max. I thought it was going to be super cute, but we went to a wedding instead, which was better than my Grinch fantasy, and had other Halloween fun.
I've noticed that the older you get, the less Halloween gets to be about getting candy. I loved getting candy when I was a kid. Halloween, Christmas, and my birthday: great times to get free stuff. Halloween was pretty sweet (ha!) because Mom let me indulge in things that would 'rot my teeth'. Anyway, this year, no trick-or-treating, no costume, and no kids to give candy to. (Not a lot of kids in high rises in Midtown.)
I started to poke around to find out what I might do to satisfy my Halloween urges, and I got it: I decided to make cookies! (I, er, actually didn't make these, but I thought about it, and that got me about 95% of the way there.)
Three of my favorites from the foodosphere:
Heidi on 101Cookbooks decided to do some cool ghoulish stuff with meringue. Recipe and picture here.
Cooking Light made some scrumptious tombstones in (chocolate) dirt. Very ingenious stuff in the kitchen. Recipe and picture here.
Again, Cooking Light, but this time something for arachnids: Recipe and picture here.
